First Book Writing Group

Tenure-line junior faculty, specialized faculty, and postdoctoral research associates are welcome to join the First Book Writing Group (FBWG) at any phase of the dissertation-to-book process.

Faculty in the arts and social sciences (fields that may not require a tenure book) are also welcome to participate.  The FBWG is a great way to meet and be in conversation with colleagues.

The RAPD faculty advisers facilitate these informal, generative sessions that help you to conceptualize and shape the project. FBWG sessions are held in the spring semester:

  • Session 1: The One-Pager
  • Session 2: Your Best Evidence / Data
  • Session 3: The Outline and the Title
  • Session 4: Planning in a Time of Uncertainty
  • Session 5: Building a Relationship with an Academic Press

The “assignments” do not require intensive preparation; they are brief and meant to serve as starting points for our discussions. During each session, our aim is to provide ample time for conversations among all the participants about each project and aspects of research, writing, and publishing more broadly.
